The Latina Army
Nancy Roldan Johnson and Carmen R. Marcano Davis Ph.D. are not just your
typical Latinas. They have wings! Yes mijas, wings.
They are the founders of an organization called, “The
Latina
ARMY”. Now this army is not the type of army that you see in movies,
read in newspapers or see fighting in Iraq. This is the type of army
that will make you want to sign-up and request to be drafted
right away!
The Latina ARMY,
Inc. is a volunteer-based, non-profit organization dedicated to empowering
young Latinas. In a national effort,
accomplished Latinas give two hours of their time to talk to young girls
at their local school or community center, and help them
envision a brighter and successful future.
Their goal
is to empower one million Latinas. Their mission is to create a movement
that will plant the seeds of success in the
minds of each Latina they speak to, while creating a national awareness
that will generate resources and aid to all Latino
communities. Their message will help Latinas understand that any
obstacle can be overcome with hard work and determination.
The
Latina
ARMY conducts workshops at various schools and community centers. They have
volunteers who tell their own personal
stories, stories of struggle, inspiration and success. When the workshop
is complete, The
Latina
ARMY hands out brochures
with
helpful information from national agencies and organizations; to help
them better their journey.
